Review - Daydreaming with Stanley Kubrick Exhibition

Hi Guys!

Know its been a while since I posted anything, just been taking time to plan certain blogposts and discover where I really want to take this blog. So I'm very excited to be back and to share some great content with you guys!

I realised the other day that it had been a looooong time since I'd gone to any kind of exhibition or gallery and seeing as Wednesday was an awfully hot day in London, I decided to spend two hours huddled up in a hustling hot building discussing film. Oh yes.

The Daydreaming with Stanley Kubrick exhibition is at Somerset House until the 24th August and is around £12.30 to get in (slightly cheaper for students!) and will definitely take up at least 1.5-2 hours of your day. The price is definitely worth it, I thought the exhibition would include around 20 pieces, however it holds around 45 exhibitions including a 2001 Virtual Reality experience, which is definitely worth checking out!

First of, if you haven't seen the likes of classic Kubrick films such as 2001: Space Odyssey, Clockwork Orange, The Shining, then I wouldn't suggest this exhibition is for you. My Mum asked if she would like it, and going on the fact she didn't know who he was, I think she wouldn't enjoy it at all. However for all the cinephiles out there, its bloody awesome.

Knowing his films is of importance as all pieces are inspired directly by his films, or the themes from his films. All works are generated by a range of artists, there's around 45 separate pieces to see, that have been inspired by Kubrick. The range of art is great, from installations, film, virtual reality to sculpture. I absolutely loved it.

Even the exhibition is laid out in a way that makes you feel your in the maze from The Shining, each room filled to the brim with disturbing, out of the box art that truly baffles you. I spent around an hour and a half in the exhibition, but even then I went back to see certain pieces, take lots of pictures and discuss the pieces. Only downside I feel was that they didn't have a gift shop, which on hindsight is a positive as I would've spent A LOT.

The feel you get from Kubrick's films is disturbance and confusion, and this is definitely the feel this exhibition will give you. Filled to the brim with artists from a street art background to those known for their paintings, at every turn this exhibition will thrill and captivate you.

Make sure to book your tickets HERE before it ends on the 24th August!

The Perks and Pitfalls of Internships

So throughout writing this blog and starting it up I have also been completing an internship at a production company. In this blogpost I just wanted to discuss a bit about the perks and pitfalls of what interning is like, as many of you will probably be experiencing work experience or doing an internship in the near future.

Meeting New Contacts

I have honestly loved working here at my internship, for me the best part about it has been meeting other creative individuals and making contacts that I know will be useful in the future. It also gives you experience with learning how different individuals work, their schedules, their methods and improving your work methods. It also makes you aware of the bubble outside of University/College life and the business world. I met so many great entrepreneurs who quite their jobs and have fulfilled their dream and started their own businesses which really inspired me to go out there and do what makes me happy.

Learning New Things

Although my current degree is in Film and TV, I wanted to learn more about Film Marketing and through my internship I have learnt how to best promote video content, approach new clients and social media marketing. Although this may not obviously relate to my degree it gives me certain niche skills that will be useful in the sector I want to go into after University, marketing, producing and distribution. It's always nice to venture out into another industry into a while, although I can't wait to get back into making films in September.

The Daily Commute

I have to say one of the weird perks of this job was actually learning the willpower to drag myself out of bed everyday and do the daily commute. I liked waking up everyday and knowing I was going to be productive and reach out to new clients, meet new people and learn new things. This skill will become handy next year when I have to do it everyday! But it's also made me realise that to be so exhausted at the end of the day, you really need a job your super passionate about to get you out of bed in the morning.

Improve Your CV

Of course one of the big perks is that after completing your internship you can add it to you CV. Having this experience on your CV is so essential in the depressing job market we are currently in and you much more likely to get hired if you have previous experience. It proves that you can dedicate yourself to a company and be reliable.

Unpaid Work

Unfortunately there is always the downfall of internships mostly being unpaid, however for the benefits you get I feel its always worth it. Whether it be a couple of days, weeks or a month I would highly recommend getting work experience/internships in your desired sector before you graduate or go into the world of work. You learn so much, meet such great people and it feels like a graduation into the real adult world.

Working Out Your Work Ethic

Although you may know this by now if your at University, if your a fast worker, if you like to be alone when working, if your a procrastinator. When doing internships because you HAVE to do certain tasks, it really kicks some bad habits out of you and you realise that sometimes you just have to do things you don't want to do. Yet eventually this will help you, work isn't always fun but it can be so rewarding.

Realising Your Career Path

If anything this internship has made me realise that although I want to go into film marketing, I don't want to go into the film commercial sector which is such a beneficial tool. It makes you realise what you really love doing, which for me is making content and sharing it, which I wasn't doing enough of. Therefore this internship has been a real learning curve for me in refining and defining what I want to concentrate on when I graduate.

Overall

As you can see there are many perks and pitfalls of internships, however all I would say is GET ONE! The perks obviously outweigh the pitfalls - yes you may be poor for a little bit, but most companies pay food and expenses, so your not losing money your just simply not making money. But your time will be well spent refining what you want to do and how to use your skills to get a head start in what you want to do!

London Review: Clapham Grand!

So one of the main reasons I wanted to start this blog was so I could give you some insight into many of the great events in London and give my personal opinion on them. I've lived in London my whole life, and I still find great new things to do in London everyday!

In the future I will be posting restaurant reviews, event reviews, gig reviews etc, just to give you an insight into whats the best events in London!

So this week it is....

The £1 Cinema Club at the Clapham Grand

My friends went to the first week of the £1 Cinema Club at the Clapham Grand which is now on every Friday until September, so make sure to check them out on Facebook as they are showing loads of great films every week!

When we first arrived there was no queue and we already had our tickets so we went straight in, were given a complimentary shot and the movie started on time. To be honest, they could've had more seating as many of the seats were very quickly taken up and we had to sit upstairs with a restricted view, however we still had a good view of the film and enjoyed Tatum in all his stripping glory!

Halfway through the film they had some great entertainment by the Forbidden Nights strippers which was hysterical and got everyone going, they then had a quick game which involved the audience, but luckily that didn't last too long and we got back to all the boys in their pants once again. Swoon!

I do have to say, the service wasn't very great at the Clapham Grand. We waited probably around 20 minutes to get a drink, and it wasn't even that busy and they had about 4 bartenders. The drinks were very expensive, and I KNOW, it's London, however £20 for a pitcher that you get about 1 drink out of each is just taking the piss a lickle bit...

After the movie (and after we'd gone to Sainsbury's and downed some cans of gin) we went back for the club to start playing the tunes. I mean it was alright, old cheesy pop, which after my few cans of gin I was into however it didn't have a very great buzzing atmosphere, however it started to busier once I had to leave (I refuse to get 5 night buses to get back home..) so I think on a usual night it would be busier especially as it's right on Clapham High Street.

Overall, it was a really fun and a VERY cheap night out for London. I would say that they could have better service and more drink options (who doesn't serve cocktails by glass, I mean even Wetherspoons does!) A really great venue and I will never turn down Tatum ever.

Check out all the other events The Clapham Grand has coming up here!

Fashion Inspired by Trainspotting!

So with the release of the new Trainspotting 2 Trailer, which has me both VERY excited and terrified, it has me thinking about how the film has had an impact on fashion. The fashion in the film is both dishevelled yet timeless, many pieces I feel we would all still wear today. So here is my favourite looks from one of my all time favourite films and how these looks can be updated for contemporary styling.

Diane's Metallic Shift Dress

I remember when I first watched this film and this piece just stood out to me. It made Diane seem niave, child-like, which she is obviously not! Recently the shift dress has come back into fashion and will always be a timeless classic. The metallic material gives it a really nice edge and to really modernise the look I love this ASOS version which has mesh inserts to give a not-so innocent feel to it.

Renton's Bomber Jacket

Ah...young Ewan McGregor...swoon!
Again, this is an iconic costume from Trainspotting as Renton wears it through the majority of the film. One against his is a trend that has recently come back into fashion with EVERY store in England selling a bomber jacket. I myself have many varieties, my favourite being my Japanese-style bomber jackets. However I am in need of just a basic black bomber jacket that will literally go with everything! I chose this basic black bomber jacket from ASOS, as its classic yet has modernised the bomber jacket with silver detailing.

Renton's Skinny Grey Jeans

My favourite of all the scenes, the toilet scene really showcases these grey distressed beauties off. Aside from giving me leg envy of McGregor's pins, these jeans are also so versatile for both day and evening looks, with trainers or heels. I love the high waisted nature of these ASOS jeans and the black detailing across the seams and would look great with a crop top or a black blouse.

Begbie's Denim Jacket

I love my classic denim jacket and basically wear it with everything, and I love that Begbie's worn it with a basic white shirt. I personally love pairing my denim jacket with a pair of black culottes with a white shirt and some trainers, but again it can be both dressed up and down. This distressed number from ASOS is a darker denim which I love and works very well to play on the double denim trend.

Renton's Graphic Tee

Another classic piece that will be timeless, the graphic tee. Renton wears a range of these throughout the film, yet I feel the yellow is a really nice touch especially for Summer! My favourite place to get graphic tee's from are Primark although if you want a really unique piece RedBubble is also great! This ASOS one would look great denim trousers or a midi skirt for Summer.

I hope you guys enjoyed my first Film post, as I study Film quite a few of the posts will have a Film focus to them which I can't wait to write for you guys. It shows how certain films never go out of style and the costumes in them are also timeless.

All images belong to Trainspotting and ASOS.

Top 5 Pieces from Primark's A/W Collection!

We all love a bit of Primarni, don’t we? And having a look through 50 of their new pieces, they are killing it for A/W 2016! Full of Christmas Metallics, Pastels, Prints – they are hitting pretty much every trend right now! Although many people have critiqued Primark for raising their prices over the last few years, I have to say due to the improved style and quality of their garments, I don’t mind whatsoever and feel you are simply paying a bit more but for a better product! I’ve also posted some images I found of how I’d style these products to give them a really high-end fashion look.

So here’s my Top 5 Primark Products from the A/W 2016 Range….

Primark Badged Bomber Jacket

Screen Shot 2016-07-13 at 16.18.29Starting off with my FAVOURITE product from the whole range! As all of you know, the bomber jacket has ben the staple of season and you can see why, its easy to chuck over jeans, a dress, you can dress it up or down. I wanted to buy one from Topshop last year, however they quickly sold out and I LOVE Primark for coming to the rescue and providing this gorgeous khaki badged beauty!
Primark Baby Pink Jacket Screen Shot 2016-07-13 at 16.17.39Sticking with jackets, this is a denim-style velvet jacket in a gorgeous baby pink. They also do a matching pink a-line skirt however I feel this would make a really cool statement piece with double denim or a slip dress. Again its a product you can style up or down and perfect for those chilly Summer nights right into Autumn!
Primark Aztec Print Culotte Jumpsuit

Although more Summer than Autumn, this culotte jumpsuit and its simplistic monochrome jumpsuit can be paired with so many options of shoes and accessories. It’s only July, so take advantage of that sun and stick this on with some lace up sandals seen in my previous post!

Primark Denim Dress

Screen Shot 2016-07-13 at 16.17.04

I love the simplicity of this piece with the dark denim and frontal zip and would be great for any events in Summer. Inspired by the amount of denim in the fashion world today this can be used to totally rock the double denim trend or with some sunnies and some Adidas trainers!

Primark Glitter Jeans

I’m a big fan of a ripped jean anyway, and Primark is jumping on the metallic trend and simply making them look even cooler! The metallic shine just draws your eye to them immediately and would look great from day to-night with trainers to heels. I also saw this style of jeans in Topshop recently, however I definitely prefer the more subtle nature of the Primark jeans.

Well thats my top 5 favourties from Primark’s A/W 2016 Collection! Make sure to head on over to Primark to check out the whole collection!

Staple of the Summer!

Y'know there's always that one iconic item or print that resonates Summer, you see it everywhere, on shirts in Topshop, on Bikini's in Primark. It's everywhere. Last year it was leaf print. This year?

The friendly little Cactus.

It's literally everywhere! I've seen it on ASOS, Topshop, Primark, Paperchase - everywhere.

I was lucky enough to go to Mexico earlier this year, and saw enough cactuses to last a lifetime
(as well as eating it - a lot - would recommend by the way!) however the cactus on these clothes seems to be the cute cactus with eyes and not the scary, very painful kind I found in Mexico. However I still think its an absolutely adorable little trend for Summer '16.

So I thought I'd bring together the best collection of Cactus-themed items to you, whether it be fashion, homeware or accessories.

 Both from Primark.

 Top from Zara.

Everything from Primark.

Both from Topshop.
From ASOS

Both from Sass & Belle.

Top 5 Sandals for Summer!

So unbelievably its already Summer already, and I think all us Brits have been struggling with the 30 degree heat already! And with Summer comes festivals, holidays, and sunny evenings. For me sandals are the best and comfiest shoes to wear for all of the upcoming events (although maybe pack your wellies for the festivals!)

When it comes to sandals long gone are the days of simple Havana flip-flops or slides, sandals come in array of colours, materials, heels, no heels, and brands. Now I’ve favoured flat sandals for this post just for ease and their always the best for the beach and to slip on to head to beach.

I’m a lover of the high street so I’ve added in my favourite high street sandals along with a few high end brands (all under £200!) I love all of these sandals because they just stand out and are the statement piece of any outfit.

Let me know which ones are your favourites!

                                                                                 PUMA x Fenty Slides

Designed by Rihanna, these were always going to be stylish! I’m a big fan of the black, but I also the pink – happen to feel the white ones wouldn’t stay white for long! In the Summer these would look great with both boyfriend jeans, or a denim a-line skirt or some culottes. Although these sandals would be one to save for when its not a rainy London day!

Check out the whole Puma x Fenty Collection here.

MABU by MARIA BK Sandals

How gorgeous are these shoes?! Hand-made in Greece these tie up calf sandals would look incredible with a playsuit or some shorts in the Summer. Recently saw a friend of mine in shoes just like these and I've become obsessed. And you just know there enough of a statement to get SO many compliments. Although they are pretty pricey on Net-a-Porter.  You can also find similar styles at Missguided and EGO which I will definitely be buying!

Ancient Greek Sandals by Caravana

Again, another pair that are on the more expensive side of the spectrum, however once again, you know your not gonna see anyone else wearing these on the high street! Looking like a costume piece out of Greek Tragedy, there are such a conversation starting piece! Although I feel their harder to style that the MABU sandals, these would work most effectively with a floaty black maxi dress for both day and night! Find here on Net-a-Porter.

Public Desire Sandals from ASOS

Here’s an example of a cheaper brand still providing gorgeously designed sandals that make a statement! At £25 from ASOS these sandals would look great with a monochrome skirt and top combo that would really attract attention to your tanned legs. Would look great paired with some cat-eye sunglasses and red lipstick!

Daisy Street Metallic Sandals

Metallics has been a massive trend throughout this whole year, so why should summer be an exception? These would give you such a Coachella-vibe if paired with ribbed shorts and a crop top for festivals this Summer. Also the Metallic edge gives it a very day-to-night vibe. This pair from  Daisy Street at ASOS are budget but will no doubt grab attention to your outfit! As you can see I am loving the lace-up effect of sandals this Summer, they can be paired with so many different outfits and are both sexy whilst being comfy to run around in!

There’s a range of sandals out there, proving that whether budget or blowout, its time to get your legs out!

Which pair was your favourite?
