How Céline Became a Fashion Bloggers Dream

If you look back at Céline’s collections circa 2006, there is nothing potentially note-worthy of their collections (in my opinion!) apart from noting their collaborations of differing textures. However in the present, its impossible to type “Fashion” into Tumblr, without seeing a Celine Phantom Tote or a pair of Celine chunky heels worn with sluggish jeans and a grey sweatshirt.

So why is this? What changed?

Phoebe Philo happened.

Raised in Harrow-on-the-Hill, London (where I'm currently based!) she studied at Central Saint Martins and went on to become Creative Director of Louis Vuitton, and also working with Chloe and Stella McCartney. Her first collection with Celine, 2010 ready-to-wear spring/summer already shows a more concentrated style.

From this collection onwards you see that the collections are more structured, the pallet more refined and…simplistic. Since Philo’s Céline tenure the collections have brought in androgynous undertones and played around with belts, layering, constantly changing the definitions of the female body. Yet it is with these collections that Céline’s clothing becomes more wearable, a stylists dream. Due to the simplistic palettes yet bold structures the clothing almost seems futuristic, bold, effortless.

The collections have played around with colour, bold burgundy’s and deep mustards being my personal favourites. However it is the Céline accessories in which most bloggers go crazy for. And I have to agree, Celine’s simplicity makes their accessories so timeless, effortless and pieces that stand alone and don’t need to be styled.

As well as in the ready-to-wear collections, structure, form and colour are played with in the shoe collection. Céline do a range of shoes to style any blogger, from my favourites the pointy black leather flats, to bold colour block heels. Unlike Louboutin, Celine’s collection represents wearability, comfort. Philo is clearly thinking about the women who have to jump on and off tube’s style here. Most of the heels have block heels or are flats, they are made form a light, flexible leather, perfect and lightweight for summer. The pieces are also so classic that they can styled with any outfit, most styles looking effortless with jeans as well as a dressy maxi dress.

The Handbag Fall 2016 Collection corresponds with the shoe collection, in both colour and comfort. Beautiful leather totes that could be used to chuck this morning’s Metro and lunch are provided as well as the beautiful Trotteur shoulder bags just big enough to fit some bank cards, phone and keys. The classic Phantom bag is still in the collection, yet brought to life with a range of summer to autumn reds, oranges, blacks.

Due to the quality and timeless nature of the bags they are pricey, ranging from £1,000 up to £3,000. Unlike Chanel, your not necessarily paying only for the name, they are made with the most luxurious fabrics, crocodile, python, lambskin. Yet it is timeless nature of the bags that you are paying the majority for. Myself, having owned a Céline mini Phantom bag knows how effortlessly cool it looks chucked onto any outfit, day or night, and that’s what your paying for – effortless chic.
