Know its been a while since I posted anything, just been taking time to plan certain blogposts and discover where I really want to take this blog. So I'm very excited to be back and to share some great content with you guys!
I realised the other day that it had been a looooong time since I'd gone to any kind of exhibition or gallery and seeing as Wednesday was an awfully hot day in London, I decided to spend two hours huddled up in a hustling hot building discussing film. Oh yes.
The Daydreaming with Stanley Kubrick exhibition is at Somerset House until the 24th August and is around £12.30 to get in (slightly cheaper for students!) and will definitely take up at least 1.5-2 hours of your day. The price is definitely worth it, I thought the exhibition would include around 20 pieces, however it holds around 45 exhibitions including a 2001 Virtual Reality experience, which is definitely worth checking out!
First of, if you haven't seen the likes of classic Kubrick films such as 2001: Space Odyssey, Clockwork Orange, The Shining, then I wouldn't suggest this exhibition is for you. My Mum asked if she would like it, and going on the fact she didn't know who he was, I think she wouldn't enjoy it at all. However for all the cinephiles out there, its bloody awesome.
Knowing his films is of importance as all pieces are inspired directly by his films, or the themes from his films. All works are generated by a range of artists, there's around 45 separate pieces to see, that have been inspired by Kubrick. The range of art is great, from installations, film, virtual reality to sculpture. I absolutely loved it.
Even the exhibition is laid out in a way that makes you feel your in the maze from The Shining, each room filled to the brim with disturbing, out of the box art that truly baffles you. I spent around an hour and a half in the exhibition, but even then I went back to see certain pieces, take lots of pictures and discuss the pieces. Only downside I feel was that they didn't have a gift shop, which on hindsight is a positive as I would've spent A LOT.
The feel you get from Kubrick's films is disturbance and confusion, and this is definitely the feel this exhibition will give you. Filled to the brim with artists from a street art background to those known for their paintings, at every turn this exhibition will thrill and captivate you.
I haven't been to an exhibition in sooo long, it's so sad! I'm really happy to see this one through your eyes though. The installations have a kind of film effect to them which is really interesting, I wish I could have gone, even though I'm more in to 19th century portraiture haha! :D xx
